Q: "Disk Not Ejected Properly" error after EL Capitan goes to sleep and wakes up again.

Hi, community.

On public launch day, I upgraded my Macs (Mid 2010 MacBook Pro 15", Mid 2012 MacBook Peo 15", Late 2011 MacBook Air and a Mid 2010 Mac Pro) to OS X El Capitan. In general terms, the upgrade process went smooth.

But, I've been presenting an annoying problem:

Each time any of my computers go to sleep, if they have an external hard drive connected to an external USB Hub (unpowered), they present a "Disk Not Ejected Properly" error after they wake up again.

I didn't have any of these issues with Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks nor Yosemite! Only now, when I upgraded to El Capitan, things are getting annoying.

Does any one else present the same issues and, do you have a solution to this problem.

Thanks for reading.

Has anybody had any joy with 10.11.3? I tried Mountain, which worked for a while, but then the same problem came back.

    Still no joy here. :-(

I went from 10.10.5 to 10.11.3 and once I did I immediately started getting the errors discussed here.  My Passport Slim 1TB connected to an Amazon USB 3 hub, on a MBP Mid 2014.  I haven't tried plugging in directly to the MBP because that would be very inconvenient and it used to work on 10.10 (all versions).

I tried Mountain, btw, and it couldn't unmount on sleep the two times I tried.  I have no problem unmounting manually.

I'm going to try disabling power naps to see what that does.  I have a suspicion that it's related to that, even though I don't remember seeing anyone here saying that was the cause.

I've had the same issue with 10.11.3.

Try UNCHECKING the "Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off" under ENERGY SAVER in the Sys prefs. It started for me when I CHECKED that box and has not happen again since I UNCHECKED it.

I also have the "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" UNCHECKED. "wake for Network access" CHECKED. "start up automatically after a power failure" UNCHECKED. "enable Power Nap" CHECKED.

I do appreciate all the work-arounds. However, changing a completely appropriate work flow (energy use, computer run time) just to prevent a potentially disastrous consequence is a SOFTWARE BUG. An unconscionable bug that I expect of fly-by-night ventures. I just can't believe how long this obvious bug has been reported without response. Does this mean all resources are on iOS? Are there any lights on in the Mac OS side? Yes, I'm frustrated.

    100% agreed.

Preventing my Mac from going to sleep works, but this is a desaster in terms of energy waste and shutting down the system every time I leave it alone for some hours adds no credits for usability either. 10.11.3 did not help at all, I wonder if we ever get a perfect working system again.

Spending money in the (third party) App Mountain also only works fine if I do not access iTunes on my Mac via the Remote app or Apple TV. This always results in disconnected drives, that cannot be mounted without a reboot. If I was willing accept this kind of trouble, I'd get myself a system with a different OS.

    Really frustrating and disappointing.

Dear Cupertino please stop adding unnecessary features in a yearly major release and get back to providing functional systems.

That's what at least I changed for.

I disabled "power nap" and this has completely solved the problem for me.  I've been through 3-4 sleep/wake cycles and not one problem.  Previously, I had it every sleep/wake cycle.

For me, I don't care at all about the power nap feature, so I'm good.  It is very, very disappointing that Apple's software quality is gone down so much, though.

I had the disk not ejected properly problem since 10.7. I have a mid 2011 21.5 inch iMac. The problem continued after installing El Capitan, but I have finally found a solution that works. I installed Mountain to unmount the external drive when when the mac goes to sleep, and remount the drive when the mac is wakened. That solved the problem from happening when the mac was sleeping, but the problem persisted at random intervals while using the computer. This was caused by the external drive going to sleep on its own and ignoring the unchecked "put hard drives to sleep" in system preferences. Apparently many external drives do this. To solve this problem I installed "Keep Drive Spinning", which you can set to access the drive at any interval you wish to keep it froim going asleep. I set mine to 540 seconds (9 Minutes) because many drives go to sleep after not be accessed for 10 minutes. These fixes have completely solved the problem.

Spoke too soon. This problem persists with both Mountain and Keep Drive Spinning installed...

Have you tried turning off "power nap"?  That worked for me.

I've searched this whole thread, but I don't see this option listed.

I had this happening, too.  It was after upgrading to El Cap.  However, I seem to remember it happening with Mavericks, too.

I think the workaround (option) that worked for me was --  System Preferences, Security & Privacy, General, Click on Advanced - You might need Admin password at this point.  Inside Advanced, I had to make sure Log Out After ___ Minutes is UNCHECKED.  I've seen others that were able to set it at a certain time, and they said that worked.  For me, I had to UNCHECK the box.

Maybe this will help someone...It's worth a shot!

"Power Nap" doesn't exist on iMacs - it's only for laptops. May try formatting the drive, but need to research whether it has done any good for others with this problem.

Same here with my brand new MBP with El Capitan. I don't know if this is a clue or not but I was using the Thunderbolt connection with Firewire to my external drive when this kept happening. Over last two days I switched to the USB 3 connection and so far no error messages and seems to be staying mounted.

Update: after reading many posts mentioning that problems were happening with firewire and USB 3 connections, I tried switching my G-Drive mobile to its USB 2 port instead of the firewire port. This seems to have solved the problem. At the very least, it has reduced the frequency of the DNEP warnings (it has never happened since the switch, but you never know). I should add a reminder that this is with Mountain and Keep Drive Spinning installed....
