El Capitan disconnects usb drives when sleeping

Since upgrading to El Capitan, whenever my laptop sleeps my external drives and usb sticks are disconnected. When I come back to it, whether in the morning or after I come in from work etc., I am greeted with "Disk not ejected properly" messages for every one. They do all reconnect when waking. This didn't happen before the upgrade to El Capitan.
