Q: El Capitan installation problem

Upgrading from Yosemite to El Capitan I got into installation problem.

Installing stops at some point and I get a message "OS X could not be installed on your computer". File system verify or repair failed.

I used disk utilities i do not spotted any problem in disk verification

Moreover, trying to reinstall Yosemite I get the message "An error occurred while preparing the installation. Try running this application again"

I have stuck. Can anyone help?

Hello Evan,

I understand you got an error attempting to upgrade to El Capitan and now can't seem to reinstall Yosemite either. It sounds like you are doing some good troubleshooting for your install. Thanks for checking with Disk Utility.

That initial error is discussed in this article:
Installer reports "OS X could not be installed on your computer" or "This disk cannot be used to start up your computer" - Apple Support

Note you will want to backup if you don't have one already.

I tried to resize the disk partition but I get the message:

"This partition contains a locked disk and can not be resized until it is unlocked"

How can I proceed?

Hi Evan,

I just saw your reply and I'm not sure what dominic23 suggested. Can you unlock the disk to continue?

OS X Yosemite: Set permissions for items on your Mac

Apply permissions to all items in a folder or a disk
Select a folder or a disk, then choose File > Get Info.
Click the lock icon to unlock it, then enter an administrator name and password.
Click the Action pop-up menu , then choose “Apply to enclosed items.”

Have a late 2011 model MBP 15". I downloaded El Capitan yesterday and tried to install it. It gets down to 5 minutes left then the screen go grey then I get error codes. Unable to do a safe startup. I do the procedure for it but it goes back to installing mode. Get error code again with 5 minutes left. Using my wife's MBP to trouble shoot.
