Q: iCloud Restore for iPhone 6s - Missing Messages/Recent Calls Missing

Day one my wife and I got our new iPhone 6s (with iOS 9.0).  We did an iCloud restore from our iPhone 5s with iOS 9.0.1 and it was successful bringing all our data including Messages and Recent Calls.  The phones were then updated to iOS 9.0.1.  Everything was working fine...

My phone had an issue which ended up getting me a replacement iPhone 6s (iOS 9.0).  From here I tried restoring from the past iPhone 6s (with iOS 9.0.1) iCloud restore.  Unfortunately, Messages and Recent Calls did not come over from the past iPhone 6s backup and I even tried various of the iPhone 6s time stamped backups.  I also updated the new iPhone 6s to 9.0.2 and still no difference with the restore.  It wasn't until I reverted back to my iPhone 5s backup (iOS 9.0.1) that it would bring the Messages and Recent Calls over.  Note that the inclusion of the Messages and Recent Calls is evident immediately after the initial restart from restore (when the phone starts downloading apps).  This has me worried going forth and here is why!

I've done a new backup and a little digging.  I've noticed that both my new backup for the iPhone 6s and wife's are both smaller than our iPhone 5s backup was.  Example for my device backups: iPhone 5s: 18 GB, iPhone 6s: 17.1 GB.  Note that this seems backwards as if there was any difference for whatever reason, I would imagine that it be on the larger resolution device.  Also, this difference in size would seem reasonable for not including Messages (includes messages, videos, audio, etc.) and Recent Calls.  There may even be other data that this did not bring over as I did not see it benefit in losing years of messages for a week of new data, i.e. I did not research the loss to the full extent.

Has anyone else experienced this issue recently with an iPhone 6s or maybe there is a known issue I just have not stumbled across.

Already tried on 9.1 earlier.   deleted 9.02 backup. Made fresh 9.1 backup. Factory reset 6s plus to 9.1.  Restored via icloud backup and issue still persists.

i am making a local iTunes backup every night until this gets fixed. Very frustrating

Interestingly enough, my iPad is on 9.0.2, backs up to iCloud, and it has a copy of my iMessages, so at least the iMessages aren't lost, just text messages. It's really frustrating that I can't get them from my iPad to my iPhone 6s. I wish I liked my 6s more. I am regretting switching from the 6 to the 6s at this point. Laggy phone, locks up, and this is the replacement phone to replace a 6s that was even worse. I can't believe how many apps I had to delete and reinstall. The iMessage issue is just one of many. The iOS 9.1 release notes don't give me any hope that it will fix any of my issues, but I am hopeful it will at least address the lags, locking up, and crashing apps.

I not sure where it  push me in closing time they didn't want to help find a solution.. any  suggestion be appreciated.. my one son has my old iphone. I think i deleted the pics from there.I have to check now if they happen to be on my old iphone.. can I bring them over to the new one? by the way I was on  9.01 version they updated my phone first b4 the restore to the 9.02 would that cause any diff? I switched from my iPhone 5S to the 6S.

My screen cracked on my new 6S and I went to the Apple Store to get it fixed

They said for the price of the screen they'll just give me a new phone and swap it

So, I backed up my phone in the store to the iCloud back up and restored to the new phone

My text messages were not there

I was there from 230 to 6:30 PM  I was there from 230 to 6:30 PM

everyone was telling me that my backup was too big and it will take time.

I deleted my shattered phone left it by Apple and went about my business.

Woke up this morning, hoping to find my texts instead I found myself on the phone with Apple

After three representatives we found out that there is nothing I can do except go back to the original five as back up that was three weeks old

They even sent me an email from the engineers saying there's nothing they can do about this

I am so disappointed because I am a longtime member of iCloud and I pay for 200 GB and I religiously back up my phone to the cloud and this is what I got after dropping my hard-earned money on a service and on a brand-new phone

if there is anyway or any solution please provide it

@mccjoe.  At this point we have not found a solution.  The bigger problem is that this continues in the iCloud backups

even if you use a back up from Your 5s and are able to restore your messages as of three weeks ago, your new iCloud backups will still not restore correctly if you were to need them.  In other words you need to start backing up to iTunes to make sure you have a complete backup.

    Hopefully Apple fixes this soon.

Ccan I just say that I did the iTunes backup following tech support help and it ended up losing all the messages on my iPhone. They are still missing and not in any of my many iCloud backups from phone, iPad or itunes

So after a few hours of continuous cycles of backing up, restoring, and resetting on 9.0.1 and 9.0.2 with no success of getting my iMessage, call history, and Shared Albums to come over from one iP6S to another iP6S over iCloud backups, I WAS FINALLY SUCCESSFUL!! I am not 100% sure this will work for everyone, but it worked for me, so give it a try and see if it works for you!

As of 10/21/15 Apple released 9.1

    1. iP6S (I will call it phone A) with all the information I want backed up and transferred (including iMessage, Phone history, Shared Albums) that was running 9.0.2, UPDATE TO iOS 9.1

    2. Run manual full backup of Phone A that is now running 9.1

    3. Update software on new iP6S (Phone B) to also run 9.1

    4. Now that Phone A is backed up on 9.1 and Phone B is running 9.1, reset Phone B to factory settings, and Restore from latest backup (that should be w/ 9.1). This should bring back your call history and iMessage/SMS that have been missing from some of our phones when trying to restore.

    5. Sit back and hope and cross your fingers that you have the same fortune I did. I know this can be frustrating to deal with, but go through these steps, iOS 9.1 may have just fixed this for some of us, if not all. Good luck!! Cheers.

    Thats great.

they deleted my old phone at the store.

What solution do you have if the old phone is deleted?

do I just keep trying to restore my new phone & hope the info comes back?

Apparently the info is somewhere in the cloud.

I am not sure if it will be of any benefit to do multiple restores with the same software. I believe the only reason it worked for me was because I was able to do a full back up and restore process after updating both devices to iOS 9.1. You can try updating just the new device, since it seems that's your only option now because the old phone was erased, and hoping that brings down the information via a restore once the new device is running 9.1.

It seems like the issue is on iOS 9.0.1/2, so maybe restoring your back up from an old back up (if you have any of those), might work as well.

Either way, good luck and let us know!

If you have the old device then there is no issue as you can backup to iTunes encrypted and then restore to the other phone without issues.

The problem most of us have is that we no longer have the old phone as it was exchanged at the store.

    No dice.

I backed up to the cloud with 9.1

erased the phone & restored with the back up from when I backed up on10/16.

    The messages did not restore.

I Erased the phone & restored with today's back up.

    that back up restored completely.

So it sounds like you were successful But you started your post with "No dice" and said you tried to restore from a backup that was done on 10/16, which i don't understand because that backup would not have been done with 9.1, which you need to have a chance at it working, so I'm a little confused.

No dice meaning, I lost all my texts from 9/24-10/16

i rely on those texts for business.

my 9/24 back up was from the 5s that was the full back up

any back up later than that was on 9.0.2 it seems that the back ups were not full back ups.

My experience with this is The 9.1 back up will restore anything backed up from 9.1

being I was able to restore yesterday's back up fully.

its a shame, I'm soooo upset with Apple.

Same issue...replaced brand new iphone 6s, restored from icloud backup.  No messages, no call history, many apps are crashing and I have to uninstall and reinstall to allow them to open.  Interestingly enough under settings->icloud there is no Messages toggle any longer?  Apple please correct this ASAP!
