Q: Trying to Use Apple Pay on the Watch

After upgrading to the iPhone 6S, I wanted to try using Apple Pay on the Watch. I input my credit card info and configured the Watch to use it. I read up on how to activate it by double pressing the button on the Watch. It seemed to work at home.

But when I tried to use it in a store, I kept getting some sort of Add a Friend screen. I was in the middle of an Outdoor Walk workout rather than the Watch face, so I tried exiting from that and double pressing again. I still got the Add a Friend screen.

By this time the clerk had rung up all my items, so I decided the simplest thing to do was to get out my credit card and swipe. Which I did.

Back home, I managed to find the Apple Pay screen somehow, but I can't figure out where that Add a Friend screen came from.

    Hi

Pressing the side button once provides access to your Friends - which is the screen you mention seeing.

To use Apple Pay on your watch, you need to press that same button twice in quick succession.

For comparison / guidance purposes: the double-click needs to be significantly quicker than the slower speeds at which a double-press on the iPhone's Home button will cause app previews to be displayed.
