Pages for MacBook Pro with OS 10.9.5

I have a copy of iWork 09 DVD which I acquired to install Pages on my MacBook Pro which has OS 10.9.5 (Mavericks). However, it won't install. How do I go about installing Pages on this computer? iWork has installed on my older MacBook with 10.6.8 with no problem. I'm keen to get Pages on my MacBook Pro, so advice very welcome. Thanks.

Is there any error dialog from the iWork '09 installer, or Error entries in the system log file via Console application that can explain this failure to install impasse? Have you tried from an external USB DVD drive? Have you tried putting the DVD into another Mac with a DVD, and using Remote Disc on the target machine to do an install over your same network segment?

Thanks again for responding. The iWork DVD installed fine on my older MacBook. My MacBook Pro can mount the disk but when I click the installer, nothing happens. I'm not sure what I should be looking for in Console to answer the other part of your query. I don't have an external DVD drive to try that route, but the MacBook Pro DVD drive works fine for other purposes so I don't think the issue is a hardware one. Any thoughts?

Eject that iWork '09 DVD from your MBP for the moment. In Finder, press shift-command-U to open the Utilities folder. Launch Disk Utility. Insert the iWork '09 DVD again, and follow the instructions in this article on how to create a disk image installer (iwork09.dmg) from your DVD. I suggest saving it to your Desktop initially. When Disk Utility has verified that it has successfully created the dmg, eject your DVD, and quit Disk Utility. Try installing from the disk image, and if successful, follow up with the earlier link to the iWork update 9.3. You double-click the .dmg, and then when the iWork '09 installer mounts, you double-click it to open it.

I just tested this on El Capitan and it wrote the iWork '09 DVD into the desktop iWork09.dmg installer.

Thanks again for the advice. I have followed through the suggestion but the disk image also fails to launch the installer. When clicking on the installer icon I am getting a black dialogue box which has Step 1: Select File with the file highlighted and a Step 2: Click Show Information Button. When I click on that button

I get a larger black box with a list of items in a lefthand column such as MD5 Hash: SHA Hash: but nothing against any of the items. Does any of this make sense to you? Thanks for your patience.

Thanks again for your patience. I have gone through the procedure again. I set it to read/write and encryption to none. There was no compression option displayed. However, the end product was the same. The Install and Read before you install icons were displayed but, when I clicked on install I got the same black dialogue boxes. See screen shot enclosed. Is there any other strategy to try?User uploaded file

Richard,

What is that icon in your menu bar that the black panel appears to be emanating from? The installer does not place anything in your menu bar when it runs. Are you running anti-virus/anti-malware/etc software that is intercepting the installer launch?

Is your iWork '09 DVD an official, Apple-branded, retail disc, or is it a trial disc, or second generation disc that was duped from the original? The steps in that article are reasonably clear to product a .dmg on your machine from the DVD. Unless that DVD is somehow damaged, or double-clicking on the installer attempts to open it in another application, it should just work.

I'm not sure what the magnifying glass type icon in the menu bar is. I've never noticed it before now. I do have MacAfee virus software on my machine, so maybe it is connected to the icon. I'm pretty sure the DVD is OK. I used it to install on my MacBook as a trial, and that worked fine. Sorry to be a bit of a pain. You'll be getting bored with my irritating problem.

Anti-virus applications on OS X cause more problems than they solve, and serve no real anti-virus purpose, as your principle risk is adware from browser pop-ups. You suggest that your DVD is a Pages '09 trial DVD. That dog won't hunt. You will need a real, retail iWork '09 DVD which is availabe on Amazon for about $23USD. Then turn off, or simply remove that MacAfee crapware, to let your Mac, and the DVD work properly.

Sorry not to have got back to you sooner. I have uninstalled virus protection, tried to install a pristine version of iWork '08 bought off Amazon meantime (it was in unopened packaging), but still having the same result. The DVD launches on my desktop, I get the expected installer and stuff appear, but when a click on the installer the mysterious magnifying glass icon appears in the menu bar with the same pattern of black dialogue boxes appearing. I am completely mystified! Any other thoughts?

Thanks.

Some third-party software, or malware remains on your computer that feels compelled to intercept that iWork DVD. Until that offending software is identified, and thoroughly removed, the status quo will persist.

To see what was installed on your machine, select the Apple logo menu in the menu bar, and choose About This Mac. Select System Report…, and when this panel appears, scroll down the left categories, and in Software, look closely at the Applications, and Installation lists. Anything stand out?

Eject the iWork DVD. Quit all indicated running applications in your Dock. From your Launchpad, click on Other, and then Console. Make certain that the Now button in the lower-right is selected. Most recent messages will appear at the bottom. Insert the iWork DVD, and observe any new messages regarding that event in the Console. Error, or Failed is noteworthy. Attempt to run the installer up to where it is intercepted by the black panels that you have shown. What is reported in the Console when the installation is intercepted? What application is reported? You can select an individual message and use the blue Inspector button on the Console Toolbar.

Hi again,

Have now been able to follow the procedure you suggested. Following insertion of the DVD and trying to launch the installer, I got the following messages from Console:

My hard drive has 72 GB space, so the "No space left on device" message seems odd. Any thoughts?
