Q: after installing El Capitan, calendar is blank.

I installed El Capitan on my iMac.

After installation my is blank.

the list of different calendars shows in toolbar on left, but no appointments appear on calendar

at the top to the list of calendars I see error message.  The message reads 'Your calendar could not be refreshed'  'Calendar couldn’t connect to cal.me.com. Make sure you’re connected to the Internet, and then try again later.'

How do I get it to refresh?

iMac, operating system 10.11

Please sign out of iCloud in its preference pane. No data will be removed from the servers, and you can retrieve it by signing back in. That said, you should always have a current archive of the data for safety's sake, even if you don't sign out.

If you use iCloud Keychain, when you sign back in to iCloud follow one of the procedures described in this support article to set it up on an additional device.

Thanks! This worked for me. It's a little more involved than you describe, and when signing out you get asked if you want to cancel or delete all your iCloud drive data... which is why I didn't sign out before. But checking 'help' revealed that you are not deleting anything from the cloud, just from the computer and it will be restored when you sign in again. And that's also what restored my calendars. You end up deleting lots of categories like keychain, find my mac, contacts, etc, etc, after deleting Drive data, but all is restored upon signing in.
