What is the best alternative mail app for snow leopard ?

I have an old Macbook with Snow Leopard set up as a media centre, the default mail app is defunked and out dated, and services such as gmail don't allow the use of it. I have firefox installed as its default browser , what is the best mail alternative , where I can use my mail services ? Would thunderbird do ?
