Netflix STILL not working in El Capitan

I updated the system to 10.11 in the vain hope that it would fix the long-standing bug in Safari that prevents me from playing Netflix movies. Alas, the bug is still there. When trying to use Netflix I get the error "Whoops, something went wrong... Display Error. There appears to be a display problem. Please ensure your monitor is HDCP compliant and is not mirrored using Airplay." I assume that my iMac is HDCP compliant and I am not mirroring it using Airplay.

I have this NetFlix "Whoops..." problem too, but only with Safari.

Chrome and Foxfire work perfectly with the same hardware and cables. I have not tried it with Apple TV.

I have uninstalled SilverLight and tried to reset NetFlix Setting but the choices described are not available in my NetFlix screen.

Streaming was working fine but suddenly .. "Whoops..."

Hunch: may be caused by 10.11.3 update.

Mac Mini with 23" Apple Cinema display and Eizo CG222W monitors. OS X 10.11.3.

I will reinstall Mac OS X and see what happens.

Eric,

Yes, I have tried Safari with and without Silverlight with no change in my problem.

From what I have read Silverfast is not needed for Safari in Yosemite and El Capitan.

I sincerely wish Apple would address the Safari-NetFlix failure because NetFlix works just fine in Firefox and Chrome, at least in my installed versions.

Something is amiss in OS 10.11.3 and/or Safari 9.0.3.

Thanks for the tip.

Hi Eric,

My education continues. I now see that Silverlight is a boot computer wide installation and as far as I know is not something that can be added to specific browsers as an extension, etc.. It "lurk" in the OS, available to any and all browsers, etc. that need it.

Apparently Chrome and Safari do not and Firefox does. So for the latter I have reinstalled it and NetFlix/Firefox works; NetFlix is happy. Firefox and Chrome do Firefox as they should, Safari does not.

My thought now is that it is a Safari problem with NetFlix but I have no ida what it may be.

Regards,

Bill

Try uninstalling Intego using the Developer's uninstall instructions. Also remove CleanMyMac3.

CleanMyMac 3 Uninstall

After un-installing, use this program to make sure you got all the pieces.

EasyFind – Spotlight Replacement

------------------------------------------------------

Eric,

I’ll have to think about uninstalling Intego software; at my end I have no indication whatsoever that it is involved in any way. For the time being I will simply turn it off.

What I have not told you is that this suite of apps, less MacButler and CleanMyMac, both of which are new try-outs, ran with no problems on a Mac Pro with a Cenima didplay and an Eizo HDCP-compliant dislayfor more than 5 years with no mention of HDCP problems.

Then the entire entourage was moved to a new Mac Mini and the HDCP NetFlix problem arose.

In the "chain of worry" are the graphic drivers in the Mac Pro, which were Nvidia GeForce GT 120s, and the display drivers built into the Mini, Intel I believe. The Nvidia’s handles HDCP, the new ones seem not to, although it is probably erroneous to arttribute the bad HDCP behavior to the graphics drivers. Just a guess.

Something changed from Mac Pro to Mac Mini, what I do not know.

Results with CleanMyMac 3 and MailButler unistalled and verified (EasyFind works very nicely) and Intego software turned off:

--- NetFlix works in Chrome on both displays.

--- NetFlix has HDCP problems in Safari:

“There appears to be a display problem. Please ensure that your monitor is HDCP compliant and is not mirrored using AirPlay.”

I have verified AirPlay mirroring is Off.

Both displays use Apple Thunderbolt to DVI adapters, one plugged into the Mini, one plugged into a HD drive at the end of a Thunderbolt chain. I have tried having both plugged into the Mini but that did no good.

BTW, with only the Cinema display connected to the Mini, the NetFlix HDCP problem still exists.

So I think I am done, believing the NetFlix Safari problem lies somewhere in the video chain, where I do not know.

Since I can always watch NetFlix on one of two TV screens fed by TiVo, or on either display using Chrome, not being able to use Safari to watch NetFlix is a bother, a problem I now choose not to pursue.

Score so far:

HDCP 1

Troubleshooting 0.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Regards,

Bill
