Q: iPad Air 2 asking for passcode instead of Touch ID because it thinks it hasn't been unlocked in over 48 hours

I have an iPad Air 2 running iOS 9.0.1. Twice since I've upgraded to iOS 9 I've gotten a message when trying to unlock my iPad that it needs my passcode because my iPad hasn't been unlocked in more than 48 hours. This morning it happened after having used my iPad last night. Anyone else experiencing this issue? I suppose I'll try the iOS 9.0.2 update for now and see if there's any change.

    Hi,

    My son's is the same.

It was just left on the corner of his bed overnight and the screen Slept but that was it.  (well, he slept as well  but that's another story).

He has now had the same issue on his iPhone he tells me today.

However I do  know that is set to "DO Not Disturb" via Scheduling.

I will check it if the iPad has a DO NOT Disturb setting.

    EDIT.

Both his iPhone and iPad AIR 2 have Do Not Disturb settings.

Despite this it has only happened once on the iPhone where it seems almost constant on the iPad.

(i.e. it does not seem relevant.)

Weird. I'll keep notes of when it happens. I also have some diagnostic apps that I may try to run.

    Hi,

    I have nothing new.

It has not happened again on my son's iPhone and for several days on the iPad he has been problem free.

This is despite no changes to his set up on either device.

I searched the community and this was the only thread that turned up using "48 hours Touch ID"

    ...

As is normal, the search facility in this forum is less than stellar. There are definitely other discussions of this, including one that I participated in.

I updated to iOS 9 on September 16 (the release date) and then to 9.01 and 9.02 as soon as they were available and as of today I have only had the 48 hour message once. It was only about 20 minutes after I had previously logged in. Others have reported seeing it more frequently but it seems to be very intermittent.

Ralph Johns UK, Search "passcode 48 hours" instead of "48 hours Touch ID" and you will see that there are multiple threads for iPhone and iPad.  Also search outside the forum in Google.

    Hi,

    Yep.

Know about the Search which is why I did it at least two ways.

What did surprise me was which way round the results were.

    Thanks for the extra info.

As you intimate there is very little to be gleaned from these posts or the spotty nature of the issue.

I will have to check if he had any apps open that he remembers.

The issue seems common. Just enter the passcode and continue. Hopefully there will eventually be a fix.

This is also the precursor to Touch ID problems.  Fist I get the 48 hour warning and soon after that it won't take that particular fingerprint.  It does, however, take other fingerprints, so it won't take my right thumb, but will take my left thumb.  Deleting right thumb and re-scanning it helps temporarily, but then it refuses it again after a few uses.  Apple is talking, naturally, being too busy building their space ship.

I'm having the same error message but my issue is I've had the Ipad for less than a week it's a personal Ipad and I have used my touch ID to login each and every time (Since I have not shut it down yet). It would be no problem to me but I can't remember my password and have already ended up locking myself out for a minute because of not being able to remember it, can anybody give some suggestions for that?

Here are the options if you have forgotten the passcode: If you forgot the passcode for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, or your device is disabled - Apple Support

I Have this same issue, and it has been happening for a while now. I just happened across these posts today after googling problems with the iPad requesting passcode after 48 hrs of not being unlocked. I use my iPad daily for just about everything, so I should not be getting the 48 hrs passcode notice. I also notice that my iPhone 6s Plus often does not recognize my fingerprint when logging into apps. I have to constantly turn off/on Touch ID to get it to work. Is anyone having that problem as well? I know it may seem like a small problem, but I like the convenience of Touch ID, especially when you login around people and don't want them to possibly see you enter your passcode.

    Hi,

We, (my son and I), have not come across a solution.

However for him it is only his iPad that is affected.  His iPhone 6 is fine.

Could this be caused by having a VPN switched on for more than 48 hours?
