Does it stay warm when the lid is closed? Can you put it to sleep with the lid open by selecting Sleep from the Apple menu?

Yes it is a little warm, and yes I can put it to sleep with lid open. Also see activity in Console at the time it is supposed to be sleeping

Test after each of the following steps that you haven’t already tried:

    Step 1

Take all the applicable steps suggested in this support article. That's the starting point for any further effort to solve the problem. Skipping any of those steps may mean that the problem won't be solved.

Note that, as stated in the article, the computer will not sleep if some sharing services are enabled. From the menu bar, select

               ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Sharing

    Turn off all sharing services.

    Step 2

If iTunes Music Sharing or Home Sharing is enabled, disable it or quit iTunes. Do the same with any third-party applications that have a similar feature.

    Step 3

    Select

 ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Accessibility ▹ Speakable Items: Off

    Step 4

    Select

               ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Bluetooth ▹ Advanced...

    and uncheck both boxes marked

Open Bluetooth Setup Assistant at startup if...

    Step 5

    Reset the printing system.

    Step 6

    Back up all data.

Triple-click the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C:

    /var/vm

    In the Finder, select

              Go Go to Folder...

from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You may not see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

A folder named "vm" should open. Inside it, there may be a file named "sleepimage". Move that file, and only that one, to the Trash, but don't empty yet. You'll be prompted for your password. Close the folder window.

Restart the computer and empty the Trash.

    Hi Linc,

I've also noticed the battery usage is much higher than normal while using the laptop. In one hour the battery life came down 24 % from 68% to 44%. And only software I've been using is Safari and Chrome.

    Thanks,

    Jacob

HI Linc, It seems the battery drain problem is fixed. After 10 hours sleep today it seemed to only have drained 6% of battery.

So apart from the things mentioned in you post, I also disabled bluetooth, and killed Chrome. I have a feeling its Bluetooth with handoff/airdrop that maybe causing the problem.

    Thanks for your help!

I have macbook pro early 2015. I have updated my OS from Yosemite to El Capitan (update comes in my app store and i update it to Yosemite to El Caption). I have noticed that my battery is draining really fast. If use my macbook having music on in the back ground or do multitasking it drains in less than 2 hours while in Yosemite it last for atleast 5 to 6 hours while doing multitasking. Please help me what should i do. Should i reinstall the OS or Have to wait for another update which might Fix This ??

    Please help me out.

Just leave the charger in or turn it off.

You can downgrade to Yosemite, just delete your hard drive and then boot the computer with Yosemite install disc and hold down alt/option then chose Yosemite install disc.

My 2015 early Macbook Pro I just upgraded to 10.11 and now I notice the battery draining much faster than with the previous OS which I believe was 10.10.  Example, I just finished a total recharge going from 9 percent to 100 percent and already after just a few minutes it is down to 94 percent and time left 2hrs and 27 minutes.  This after upgrading to the latest version OS.  How can I downgrade to the previous version where the battery life lasted several hours for two days.  Even since I started typing this the battery is now down to 93 percent.  I must get the previous version back in.

    Thanks

I think I found a solution to my power draining problem.  With fingers crossed i did a SMC reset, <Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support>

Immediately  I observed in the activity monitor a substantial decrease in energy impact.  Activity monitor shows almost 16 hours left on the battery charge, granted, I only have Safari with 10 or so windows and tabs open and Mail active, but this is quite a turn-around from what it was.  I'll give it the big test tomorrow and then I'll know I have a fix.  If this turns out to be the fix.  What a difference in the battery power usage

Any further thoughts on resetting SMC? Did this solve the problem completely?

No resetting didn't help.  I called support and they told me to sign out of the cloud and sign back in.  After a while and all the email came back in, Mail didn't take up the CPU and battery power, but, every  now and then Mail will start gobbling up CPU and battery power, so I quite Mail and start it back up and all is good for a while.  I still think there's a bug in the system 10.11 because my iMac is still on 10.8 and I never experience the same problem with Mail and gobbling up CPU.  I will say, after I found the source of battery drain my MacBook Pro 2015 model is pretty good on battery power getting 10, 11, 12 sometimes more hours before needing charge.
