Question

No Mouse Hover Functions in El Capitan

Hi,

Having upgraded to El Capitan (Version 10.11 (15A284)) a few days ago, I've since noticed that none of the mouse over or hover functions work. This applies to things like the Safari, where hovering over a link will not highlight it, or a YouTube video where the scrub bars do not appear when moving the cursor over the video element. It also applies to other bowsers like Firefox.

It also seems to apply to the OS interface itself. Instead of simply clicking on the top menu (File, Edit, etc...) and moving the cursor over each item to highlight it, I need to hold down the mouse button and release in order to select something.

Now, what I'm not sure of is if this is by design, or if it's a genuine bug.

If it's the former, is there an option to revert the mouse behaviours back to the more traditional 'click, hover, click' like there was is previous OS X releases?
If it's the latter, then how would I go about reporting the bug?

I realise this is a fairly minor issue, but it's kinda frustrating.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

My guess is you have something interfering with the normal function of the cursor. Do you have any mouse related software installed?

Hi,

The mouse I have is a MAD CATZ R.A.T. 3. Having checked the product's website, it seems like the latest mac drivers they have are for OS X 10.9. So I might have to wait until they provide El Capitan drivers. But I was curious if this is a common problem amongst 3rd party mice when it came to Macs, and if there was a fix that could be applied.

Still, I'm open to any suggestions as I'm (reasonably) comfortable in going into the OS folders and terminal.

I don't know if it is common, but many configurable mice like that use kernel extensions to interrcept the normal mouse functions. So, there probably is nothing you can adjust.

As NMAc1983 brought up, this annoying issue is totally due to the Mad Catz mouse. I have a RAT 7 Contagion which I use for gaming and for when my fingers get tired on the Magic Trackpad. In general, I rarely use the mouse apart for gaming.

I was at a loss when (following the El Capitan upgrade) these menu pointer and dock unhiding issues surfaced. And because it happened only intermittently I just could not figure out what the root cause was, so thank you NMac1983!

You can test the whole issue quite easily if you have a second pointing device:

Start with mouse disconnected - no problem with menu's and dock.

Connect mouse without moving it: still no problem (when using another pointing device).

Move the Mad Catz mouse once and the problem starts.

Disconnect the mouse, you'll be back to normal.

I have the same issues since updating to El Capitan. As StrictlySpeaking my mouse is also a RAT 7, but this problem didn't exist before the update. I used USB Overdrive to programm the mouse buttons, cause the Madcatz drivers doesn't work as well. However, i tried a clean install of 10.11 with a bootstick to look if the problem still would exist. No success. Then i tried a clean install of 10.10, cause the problem wasn't existing there. But again no success. Now i went back to 10.11 and testes my 20$ Logitech mouse, and everything was working as well. So a 150$ mouse isn't working but a 20$ mouse is?

I will try a solution turnoround this evening but I'm not confident.

Update: I've loaded the Madcatz Software (for 10.9) against from here http://madcatz.com/downloads/ and now its working. No USB Overdrive or something like that installed, just the Madcatz software.

These are the steps you have to do:

Uninstall all other mouse drivers - USB-Overdrive, SteerMouse, Logitech, Razer, etc.
Restart.
Install the MadCatz driver/editor software.
Restart.
Add the Mad Catz Editor to the Accessibility permissions list. System Prefs -> Security & Privacy -> Privacy -> Accessibility. Click the lock to authenticate then drag the Mad Catz Editor into the list to give it permissions.
Create/edit profiles and commands. Be sure to save the profile(s).
Use the menubar item to assign a profile to the mouse.

If it's not working, add that to your startup items:

/Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/MadCatzSmartTechnology.app

Try it out!

Hi there,

This helped a bit. I had already installed the 10.9 drivers from the Mad Catz site. Initially, things worked, after the restart at the end of the driver installation process, I had hover functions back. But the following day when I booted back up again, the problem returned.

The weird thing is that now the issue appears to be an intermittent one, rather than constant. Some times when I boot up it works fine, others, it doesn't. Furthermore, adjusting the Accessibility settings like you described, didn't seem to make much of an impact. And finally, the Activity Monitor shows that the Mad Catz software boots up on startup and my mouse profile is loaded.

It hasn't completely solved the issue but it's a step in the right direction. So cheers! 🙂

I guess it's looking like I'll have to wait for 10.10 drivers from Mad Catz in order for the problem to be tackled properly. I'll try dropping them an email to see if they plan to release El Capitan drivers and when.

I use the RAT 3 for working with my Adobe CC (it's much more comfortable than other mice I tried 😉) and were shocked when this problem come up.

I tried re-installing some drivers, but it doesn't worked. So after I've read your manual I re-installed the drivers for 10.9, made a reboot and tadaaaa all my hover issues are working like always.

I fixed it by connecting the usb dongol for my mouse to the apple keyboard which I have. I was sticking it to the back of my secondary screen which gave me this problem. Hope it helps!

Unfortunately, I've already tried that fix. It does not matter where the mouse is plugged in, this is an issue with drivers and the OS. What's amazing is that Steermouse has almost completely solved the issue, which is something MadCatz apparently can't do....

I have exactly the same problem as you very well outline here.

There seem to be alot of people reporting various mouse/hover problems

after update to El Capitan.

I am on Macbook Air, using a standard mouse with no drivers, and the problems also happen using trackpad

I was lookin for the solution all over the internet and i have found one. I downloaded the USB Overdrive 3.2 (the latest update) an is working fine with OX 10.11 and my R.A.T. 9. I was able to program my mouse with out any problem. Hope it helps!!!
