Q: Does my system support an update of OS X?

My system is OS X 10.6.8.  My most used web pages are asking for an upgrade of safari (or I can't continue using them) which my computer says I am updated on.  I assume I need an update of my operating system, but not sure what my computer will actually support.  It has 2 GHz intel core 2 processor, and 2 GB 667 MHz of memory.

Thanks

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, click on More Info, and compare the model identifier with the following, which are the earliest Macs of each type that can run Mountain Lion and newer:

    iMac7,1

    MacBook5,1

    MacBookPro3,1

    MacBookAir2,1

    Macmini3,1

    MacPro3,1

    Xserve3,1

A Mac older than those listed which has a Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) or better CPU and at least 2GB of RAM can run Lion 10.7, which is available by clicking here. No OS newer than 10.6.8 supports PowerPC software such as Microsoft Office 2004.

Upgrading to Yosemite or El Capitan

You can upgrade to Yosemite from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Yosemite can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.

    Upgrading to Yosemite

To upgrade to Yosemite you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Yosemite from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Yosemite is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Yosemite

             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later

             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later

             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later

             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later

             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later

             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later

             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later

To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.

         Are my applications compatible?

See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.

It says that it is Macbook 5,2 and Core 2 Duo, so that means I could upgrade to Mountain Lion or newer?  Just making sure I totally understand.  Thanks!

Yes. If you do, you should install more RAM in the computer.

Ok.  Not very smart at this.  How would I go about installing more RAM?  Thanks so much for your help!

Click here and follow the instructions. Your computer can take 6GB total.
