Dear Apple:  what do we do with these iPads that you have made obsolete because you no longer allow us to upgrade the software?

what does the time/date stamp have to do with the fact that I have a device that Apple obsoleted and I am asking what I can do with it other than use it as a paperweight or contaminate a landfill with it?

I have one of these iPads, too. No, sorry, that is all the iPad can take. It is just getting A little old. IOS 5.1.1 is all.

There are still older versions of iOS apps that still function the way they are suppossed to on my original iPad on iOS 5.1.1'

I just recently ressurrected my ye olde original iPad 1 and installed as many older versions of my currently used versions aa was possible.

I have quite a few apps that still work on my old iPad 1.

What apps are you using or want to use?

You could try and download an app that is for a newer iOS version and see whether or not a pop up window appears that tells you that an older version of an app is available and whether you would like to download it to your older iPad 1.

Not all developers save their older app versions for older iOS versions.

So, it's a little bit of a hit or miss procedure.

If it is a paid app, you will still need to pay for the older version, but the new version will still be available for download to you no charge, in the event at some point, you purchase a new/er iPad model.

    Good Luck!

I know it seems kind of bizarre that the 1st gen can only go as far as iOS 5 while 2nd gen can run 4 versions newer (iOS 9) - with some performance hit of course. If Apple lets you install iOS 9 on the 1st gen iPad, assuming that iOS 9 doesn't kill it completely, I bet you won't like the experience.
