Q: can't use safari. It says i need flash player update

I cannot use Safari because I keep getting a message that "The Latest Version of Flash Player is Ready to Install. ", but it's not from Adobe. It says it is from "http://www.youf1le.com/", and there is only an "OK" button. No option to cancel or do it later. Everything else in Safari is disabled. I have restarted in safe mode, forced quit Safari, but nothing works. That message won't go away. My iMac says my software is up to date. What can I do to be able to use Safari again.

iMac (21.5-inch Mid 2011), Mac OS X (10.7.5)

Force quit Safari then with the Shift key pressed, restart Safari.

This worked. Thanks so much. Do I need to do anything else to delete the cause of this so that it does not come back anymore?

I came up with the same problem.  Safari cannot be used when the www.youf1le.com screen pops up.  I have tried to force quit it but not working.  Could anyone help me out on this?

    Thanks!

It still keep coming back after Force Quit - same message plus Safari effectively corrupted now. So I am unable to load Preferences before the error message kicks in

Today, my wife accessed an innocent web page and clicked on a picture on the web page to enlarge it and resulted in the scenario you mentioned with Safari locked out and a pop up window  with a single option to install the latest version of Flash. My wife knew that she should not instal software without letting me know. Fortunately, I had firefox installed on my imac and as such was able to start it and came across your post and the solution to clear the safari faukt which was provided by CKUAN. I followed the solution advice by clicking on the apple logo on the top left of the safari display and selected the FORCE quit option. This produced the pop up of the active running tasks. I selected Safari and hit the force quit button. This killed Safari and the pop up window ,relating to FLASH. Then I hit the shift key and started Safari from the icons. It started successfully and got rid of the window. Previously I found that, following a force quit, if i just restarted Safari without depressing the shift key it returned me to the previous display and I got back the Install latest Flash pop up window, again. Now with Safari restarted successfully, I deleted all history for today. From a simple google search on youf1le.com + Flash I was able to find that this is a new piece of malware that  has been created and as a result you should not click on the instal button or you could be infecting your machine.  My kit is an iMac Retina 5K , running El Capitano and Safari 9.0.

There's a wonderful little app by Thomas R. Reed (a well regarded helper here) call MalwareBytes, which is a free download, and very quickly identifies and takes care of malware. It is very highly recommended by 99% of "helpers" here.
