iOS device backups useless in iTunes

I backed up my iPhone 5S 64 GB (iOS 8.4.1) in iTunes. I backed up my iPad Air 128 GB (iOS 8.4.1) in iTunes.

I used iTunes to upgrade the iPhone 5S to iOS 9.0.2 and that upgraded successfully, though it took a long time.

A few days later I tried to upgrade the iPad Air to iOS 9.0.2 and it got caught in the "slide to upgrade" loop. After multiple attempts to get past the "slide to upgrade" loop via recovery mode, it would get back into "slide to upgrade" loop when restoring from backup.

Support call with Apple had tech tell me that my backup is useless now due to iTunes bug.
