el capitan hdmi problems

After updating to El Capitan on my Mac Mini the HDMI port no longer works.

I have two monitors set up - one over Thunderbolt and one over HDMI.

After the update the HDMI port seems dead. Only Thunderbolt works.

I have tried multiple cables. After downgrading back to Yosemite the HDMI port works again.

What model Mini?

Have you tried:

- Resetting the SMC and NVRAM/PRAM

Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

About NVRAM and PRAM

- Try starting in Safe Mode

OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?

- Boot to Recovery and repair the startup disk

OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support

- Reinstalling EC?

I have just fixed a related problem on my mac: the HDMI to HDMI was giving 'no signal' on my samsung hdtv, after many previous months of working properly.

The fix that worked for me is very simple: I went into System Preferences -> Displays, and changed the 'scaling' to the setting above 'default'. I then restarted (with HDMI cable attached). A few seconds after restarting, the picture from my mac appeared on the TV.

Now, going into Preferences -> Displays, I can see the options for the samsung that were absent during the problem.

Prior to this fix, I reset the SMC and NVRAM as suggested, but found no improvement from this.

Hope this saves others hours from wasting hours on this, as I just have.
