El Capitan stuck on load

Hi,

After upgrading to El Capitan, it fails to load and gets stuck every time.

On the developers forums there were plenty of people with same issue and good samaritan Max108 made the following steps

Boot into Recovery Mode (cmd+R)
From the central menu open Disk Utility.
Then select the "Macintosh HD" partition, then the "Unlock" from the "File" menu (If you don't see "unlock" then go on to step 4 - If you don't see "Macintosh HD", stop and post back)
Select all of the writing in bold below and press cmd+C to copy it to the clipboard:
cd "/Volumes/Macintosh HD" ; ls -1 Library/Extensions/ ; find Library/Application\ Support -iname *.kext ; find Library/Filesystems -iname *.kext ; find System/Library/Extensions -ctime +2d -depth 2
Then go to the Utilities menu, open Terminal and press cmd+V to paste the long command into it.
Select all the output from that and press cmd+C to copy it to the clipboard.

The list from the output gives the idea which kext are not letting your mac boot and Max108 was helping people to resolve this problem.

I've managed to fix it myself, using developers and community topics and great guy Max108 help.

I'm a noSuperPro user, but solution here is to remove .kext kernel extension files which prevent El Captain loading due to unknown for me reasons.

So while in RecoveryMode, start terminal and cd "/Volumes/Macintosh HD/System/Library/Extensions" and remove all unnecessary broken kext files using rm -rf or create a temp folder and move them there. I simply deleted them

In my particular case these 3 were the reason:

System/Library/Extensions/ssuddrv.kext/Contents

System/Library/Extensions/USBExpressCardCantWake_Huawei.kext/Contents

System/Library/Extensions/EltimaAsync.kext/Contents

AFTER DELETE - El Captain loaded successfully!

Your problem comes about because the Finder allows you to have filenames with spaces in them ("Macintosh HD") but the terminal isn't quite as forgiving.

One solution is to just type part of the command in...

cd /Volumes/Macinto

then hit the tab key. Autocompletion will give you something like...

cd /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD

and then you can continue typing in the full path name.

Thanks so very much for this, you saved my sanity. I had a previous submission where someone who I believe has an Apple background and followed all his steps through to and including erasing the disk and doing a clean install. This worked on my Mac Pro (on which I had only external data) but did not work on my Macbook Pro where after erasing and doing a clean install, I copied my data back from the time machine back-up. This obviously copied the Eltima files back (which have now been verified as the culprits). It was only after doing a third full back up where time machine gave an error to the effect "EltimaAsync.kext was an invalid file and would not be copied" that I looked this up and found your post.

Again, thank you so very much for solving my extreme frustration (with Apple - you would think they would have this sorted before release and still not common knowledge after how many months?)

And it worked also !!! with the advantage of keeping all the old stuff in extensions and not messing with it at all and just running a simple uninstallation pkg.

Strange that the Apple tech didn't know about this...or that... One wonders sometimes !

I Have no idea ...! But since it worked with just removing the EltimaAsync.kext this one might be the troublemaker ...

Bro, It took me 4 days since i found this problem on a clients Macbook pro with El Crapitan. I was about to format the drive and do a fresh install after i tried every forum/suggestion/solution.

Thank goodness you came along and posted the fix that finally got the El Crapitan going again.

Thank you, both of you. I am trying to solve the problem. As I am not into "terminal" however, I'd greatly appreciate if you could specify how to use the rm -rf command to delete the files I get on the list.

Hi,

When you say delete from 2013 back, can you be more specific please, eg :

delete all files whose date modified is older than 01/01/2013,

or all files whose date last opened is older than 01/01/2013 ?

And how did you get to use finder to see the files as the Macboook is not loading an operating system to use finder ?

Also, for anyone who is not terminal savvy, if you have renamed your hard drive, replace "Macintosh HD" with the name you have given it.
