It sounds like you have a couple of applications on your Mac that don't seem to be functioning properly after updating to Mac OS X 10.11. I would use the Disk Utility to verify and repair the startup disk to help try and fix any issues with the file system. It also clears some system level caches that may be interfering with the applications function:
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck
Try Disk Utility
Use these steps to use the Disk Utility app to verify or repair a disk.
- If you're using OS X Lion or later, start the computer from Recovery System or Internet Recovery. If you're using an older version of OS X and your computer came with a Mac OS X Install disc, insert the installation disc and restart the computer while holding the C key instead.
- When your computer finishes starting up, choose Disk Utility from the Utilities window, or from the Installer menu if you're started from an installation disc.
- Click the First Aid tab.
- Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
- Select your Startup Disk (usually named "Macintosh HD").
- Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
If the issue persists I would next:
1. Turn off Notes and Calendar in System Preferences > iCloud
2. Restart the computer
3. Re-enable Notes and Calendar, and test the issue again
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities, let us know how that goes!

Oct 4, 2015 12:22 PM in response to zalamander1by Eric Root,Quit the application.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.reminders.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart the computer, open the application, and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.
Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.
