I did NOT back my iPad 2 and tried to update to iOS 9 from iOS 4, how do I restore my factory settings to update iOS 9?

when connected to the computer
one can open iTunes and navigate to
the iPad and click the restore button and choose factory settings
Thanks, did that, got unknown error occurred (9), did all the trouble shoot for "Resolve USB-related alerts in iTunes" except replacing the USB which worked fine previously and is OEM.
