Do standard earbuds work on iPad? I want to listen to audiobooks while using the treadmill, but have not been able to find earphones that work with my ipad. Do I need to download an app of some sort?

Any earbuds with industry standard 3.5mm (1/8") plug should work.
If they don't, should I assume this is a problem with my iPad? Is there a setting I should check?
Check the external volume volume controls with the earphones plugged in.
Check for a volume control within the Audiobooks.
Do the audiobooks play through the iPad speakers if no headphones are plugged in?
Does the iPad play music through the headphones? Through the iPad speaker?
Yes, the audiobooks play without headphones, and when I plug in the headphones, the volume control indicates that the headphones are at full. The iPad doesn't play anything through the headphones, but yes through the speaker.
Assuming that the headphones are known to be good by testing on another device, there are a couple things we can try. First, try inserting/removing the headphone plug several times, in case the jack is stuck. Then try a forced restart of the iPad.
Tap and hold the Home button and the On/Off buttons for approximately 15-20 seconds, until the Apple logo reappears. When the logo appears, release both buttons.
No content is affected by this procedure.
Okay. I tested the earphones on another device and they work. I inserted/removed the plug several times, then restarted. No luck. I will check back in a while for a reply as I have to go now. I appreciate your help.
Since this solution did not work, should I assume that it is a hardware problem?
