My iPad keeps wanting me to upgrade 9.0.2 but last time I did it got into a mess

My ipPad 2 keeps prompting me to upgrade to 9.0.2

Last time I upgraded when prompted, my iPad got stuck in a loop - password - slide to update. I had to start from scratch!

My copy of iTunes is the latest version but I get a message saying it needs a higher version for this iPad.

The iPad is working well with the current OS.

Am I safe to upgrade?

iPad 2, iOS 9, I think currently I am on iOS 9
