Can I upgrade to El Cap?

Hi all,

I'm just wandering if you could help me out with something.

I upgraded to Yosemite a while ago now, but I had constant freezing, crashing, lag, ect on a mid 2012 non - retina MaBook Pro 13''. So I tried to downgrade, but it all went wrong (Long story) and I was left with a computer without an operating system installed. So I took it to the Apple store and they said they couldn't put Yosemite back onto it whatever they tried (Obviously I forgot to tell them I didn't want Yosemite, glad it didn't work!)

But anyway, now I've got Mavericks and that's running fine. But if Yosemite won't work, what about El Capitan? I would definatley find the split screen useful, so I would like to upgrade. So, 1. Can I get El Cap if I completely broke Yosemite, and 2. If I do get El Cap, will I have the same lagging and crashing of Yosemite?

Thanks in advance.

If you could not run Yosemite then I would not contemplate installing El Capitan. If Mavericks works ok then stay with it. As we know no details of your Mac you may perhaps consider posting an etrecheck report so we have some slight idea on your Mac's capabilities.

Cheers

Thanks for the advice. I'll probably hold off the upgrade.

First time using Etrecheck... I hope this is what you need!

In theory, your machine should be able to run Yosemite or El-Cap just fine.

The only reason I can think of for why a clean install would have failed is hardware. Specifically bad RAM. Macs are notoriously picky about RAM. It seems Yosemite and El-Cap are even more picky than previous releases.

If you have 3rd party RAM installed, try removing it and re-installing the factory RAM.

One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install the new OS, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything. By doing this, if you don’t like it you won’t have to go though the revert process.

Check to make sure your applications are compatible.

Application Compatibility

Applications Compatibility (2)

Open Disk Utility, select your hard drive (step 1), then the Partition tab (step 2), and select the partition. Using the /// at the bottom move it up (step 3) until the size box decrease by about 50 GB. Select the newly created space and hit the + button (step 4). Name it something and select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format (step 5). Then hit the Apply button(step 6). Download the installer from the App Store and when it starts, point it at the new partition. You might want to make a copy of the installer outside the Applications folder to avoid having to re-download it in the future. Once installed, go to System Preferences/Startup Disk, select the new partition and reboot. Test away.

In compatible kernel extensions are a very common cause of kernel panics when installing a new version of OS X.

/Applications/VMware Horizon Client.app

[not loaded] com.vmware.kext.vmioplug.12.2.7 (12.2.7) [Click for support]

I am not familiar with this vmware component. I'm used to about 4 VMware kernel extensions.

/Library/Extensions

[not loaded] com.displaylink.dlusbncm (1.11.0 - SDK 10.9) [Click for support]

[loaded] com.displaylink.driver.DisplayLinkDriver (2.3 - SDK 10.9) [Click for support]

I do not know anything about this kernel extensions, but the SDK information implies it is for Mavericks, and maybe it does not like Yosemite. Perhaps a new version is available that is Yosemite compatible (and then El Capitan).

You can use Safe mode to see if panics stop as Safe mode does not load 3rd party kernel extensions.

Totally Off Topic

JavaAppletPlugin: Version: Java 8 Update 31 Check version

I would make this Java plug-in go away, as Java in your browser is not safe (do not confuse JavaScript with most of the Web depends on, with Java - they are totally different).

Look in

Finder -> Go -> Go to Folder -> ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ (that is a tilda/ as in ~/ )

Finder -> Go -> Go to Folder -> /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/

Thanks for the really quick help everyone! I am pretty dependant on VMware so I don't want to touch that. Same with Display link (That is a driver for a USB - DVI adaptor for my monitor). I won't even think about any new updates on this machine. I can enjoy the new features when I get a new Mac in a few years once this one dies.

(Also, I am going to delete Java form my browser right now!)

Thanks for the support everyone!

Can I upgrade to El Cap?
