Q: Can't copy or drag files to the external hard drive.

Earlier in Yosemite the files could have been copied or dragged into the hard drive. After upgrading to El Capitan, I can't do that anymore. Most of the people have suggested to re-format the hard drive, but that's not the solution. It will still not allow to copy or drag files into the hard drive.

Hello

Same problem I faced it today when I tried to connect my 1TB WD E external disc to my Macbook Air 2013. (it was working fine with Yosemite)

What I did is very simple, now everything is ok and works fine.

here is the guidelines for you.

Make sure your Drive is disconnected from your mac

01. Visit this site http://www64.zippyshare.com/v/2gXV0C1e/file.html

02. click the Download button at the top right of the screen, now you have the 12.9 MB dmg file in your mac.

03. There is a read me file when you open the setup file, just open it and copy the serial key

04. Now follow the instructions and install it (MAKE SURE YOU ARE OFFLINE WHEN PASTE THE KEY AND CLICK CONTINUE)

05. Restart your mac

06. Connect your hard disk to the mac... YOUR PROBLEM SOLVED

Thank you, great solution. It's a pity Apple makes these changes with no consideration for the problems they can cause. My Mac now runs much slower with el Capitan and various programs such as Photos are not an improvement on what we had before. Lets have change for a good reason not just for it's own sake!

P.S. Wasn't able to drag and drop to my Toshiba 500GB external; Toshiba ABSOLUTELY refused to offer any assistance (“It’s Apple’s problem, not ours”). Last product I EVER buy from Toshiba.

Hi, I am having this problem, my WD 1TB external drive was working fine with my previous white macbook OS Leopard. Now I am using macbook air OS El Capitan, it can only read and copy files from the external drive to my macbook, but can not copy anything into the external drive.

I have all my lifetime back up in this drive.
If I do what you suggest, will it keep my files in the drive or will it erase the existing files?
Really need your help & advise.

Were your existing files in the drive erased or safed when you did that?
i got WD 1TB also with the same problem

Installing Tuxera only adds functionality to your computer and does not harm your files.

This will not harm your files. Make sure to follow directions exactly (unplug external; turn off wi-fi or internet connection after download).

This link does not work unfortunately. But I found a free Paragon driver on Cnet http://download.cnet.com/Paragon-NTFS-for-Mac-(Yosemite)/3000-2122_4-76169564.ht ml.
It seems to be official version and free, which is surprising for Paragon, but nevertheless it solved my problem, so I am happy now
