Q: Photos preparing library stuck at 50%.  What to do next?

I just upgraded to El Capitan yesterday evening.  When I launched Photos for the first time last night, it started the preparing process.  I left it running all night last night.   10 hours ago it was at 50%.  It is still at 50%.  I am looking at the Activity Monitor and the % CPU is 0.0 but the CPU Time is 8:45.  Wondering if it is hung or what to do next?

Thanks

    Hey toddster,

Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.

It looks like Photos isn't responding during the "preparing library" process. I know it can be an uncertain situation when apps seem to have hung.

If the process still hasn't progressed or completed by now, I'd recommend that you Force Quit the Photos application and restart your Mac. Next, use the Photos library repair tool by holding Option-Command when you open Photos and clicking Repair in the dialogue that appears.

Also, I'm wondering--are you using iCloud Photo Library on your Mac?

Let us know how these steps go and if we can help further.

    Best Regards.

    Joe,

You are correct.  I spent some time with Apple Support (two technicians) today and the iphoto to photos migration is now done.  They had me 1) fix permissions on my files just in case ... so that I can read + write all files;  2) reinstall the old iphoto just in case; 3) use the Photos library repair tool like you mentioned to run repair first and then a rebuild second; 4) re-start the iphoto to photo migration.  It was a long day (waiting) but it is done.
