Q: Wifi is incredibly slow on OS X El Capitan

So after installing OS X El Capitan my Wi-Fi is so so so so so slow.

My Internet Connection Speed is 2Mbps (240kb/sec) and it shows 2Mbps on my iPad and iPhone (using the speedtest.net app). On my MacBook Pro it shows me 120-250Kbps (10 to 25kb/sec) when I'm using Spotify, YouTube and anything that's Internet based (Apple Forums took me a minute to open)

I've never ever had this problem on Yosemite. My wifi works fine for sure. Even during downloading OS X El Capital from the App Store my speed was constant 230-240 Kb/sec but after installing El Capitan nothing works fine (Internet Based Applications)

I did everything I could. Deleted Wifi AP Name and added it back. Restarted everything (Router and Mac). Turned off Wifi and turned it back on.

I don't think its my wifi router or anything or else fault as my iPad and iPhone would have been affected as well.

Can someone please tell me if they face this issue as well and if yes what's the solution?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013), OS X El Capitan (10.11)

Go step by step by step and test.

    1. Power off the router. Unplug it from the wall. Wait a while.

Plug it back to the wall. Power the router on. Wait until all the lights are lit properly. It will take a while.

        Restart the computer.

        Start up in Safe Mode.

        https://support.apple.com/kb/PH18760?locale=en_US

    2. Empty Cache.

        Safari > Preference > Advanced

Checkmark the box for "Show Develop menu in menu bar".

Develop menu will appear in the Safari menu bar.

Click Develop and select "Empty Caches" from the dropdown.

    3. Deselect Proxies if selected.

System Preference > Network > Advanced  > Proxies Tab

Unlock the lock if you have to.

Under "Select Protocol", uncheck any box if checkmarked.

        Click "OK" then  "Apply”.

This helped me with Safari but when playing YouTube Videos, Spotify or anything that's Streaming or something this problem yet exists. Specially on Speedtest.net

I just checked my Windows Based Laptop and that works perfectly fine as well.

I'm also experiencing a significant drop in internet speed since upgrading to El Capitan.  A second macbook (that's still on Yosemite) connected to the same router runs at normal speed.

I can't wait for the fix

It's weird cause Safari is supposed to be faster on OS X El Capitan but the Wifi itself is messing up

I'm afraid I don't have a solution for you, but maybe some information that might be helpful in tracking one down...

I had awful wifi throughout most of Yosemite. Even after the fix that was supposed to be 10.10.4. Dropping signal. Ridiculously slow speeds after a few minutes. The need to turn wifi off and then on again, many times during the day. And it seemed to slow other machines on the network too.

But El Capitan -- for me -- has been a radical improvement. Our top speed where we are is 10.4 mbs and I consistently get above 9 mbs. This situation is only a few days old, of course, after a long miserable spring and summer.

But maybe it suggests that the problem for you might not be the new operating system, at least not exclusively.

Wish you the best of luck!

I am experiencing exactly the same problem. It is not limited to just one Wifi network. It happens both on my home and work network. Re-starting the router and/or my laptop (latest macbook pro) makes no difference!

What a complete load of rubbish. Come on Apple why do you keep making major releases with more holes than a swish cheese?

It smacks of incompetence or maybe you don't think you have to try that hard anymore?

I'm also having the same problem. Wi-Fi was working perfectly on Yosemite and Mavericks. I noticed that when I disable bluetooth, Wi-Fi speeds instantly increases, but I need bluetooth always on for instant hotspot and some accessories. So, I came back to Yosemite to wait for a fix. It's a shame for +1200$ (twice more on my country) machines having basic problems like that

We need to report this issue to Apple using Feedback Assistant located in /System/Library/CoreServices/Applications/Feedback Assistant.app

Same problems. Devices in the same area have downstream speeds of 18Mbps. Since updating to 10.11, the MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) has .7 to 2Mbps downstream.

I do believe, if I remember right, that I did delete the cache etc. before I saw a big improvement (I ran the latest version of Onyx). So this sounds like good advice from dominic23. But I do want to reiterate, I had horrible Internet speed... on pretty much all networks, including outside our home... when running Yosemite. But in El Capitan, it's consistently at the 9 mbs rate (which, for where we are, is about as fast as it will get).

Something else that seemed to be a huge help was making sure to NOT be running Dropbox or Google Drive. Even when you're not uploading anything. They both seem to place a crazy drag on things. Also, check to make sure the slowdown isn't due to other updates being downloaded or pics or music being synced to iCloud... a distant possibility, but possible nonetheless.

One other thing... I did notice, during the Yosemite issues, that connecting my computer to the network seemed to slow all others. Whatever it was was definitely buried somewhere in the System files, I'm guessing, but not something inherent to the core. More likely... something gone wrong with the local administration of everything... like a specific setting or, as dominic23 says, a cache that's gone wrong.

All this just to say... I don't *think* the problem is El Capitan itself. It sounds like it's something else. Said just so you can start looking down a different path for solutions.

From this link, some suggestions: http://www.gottabemobile.com/2015/10/02/common-os-x-el-capitan-problems-fixes/

Fix OS X El Capitan WiFi Problems

Reasons to Install OS X El Capitan - 2

For the most part the OS X El Capitan WiFi problems are small and less likely than on OS X Yosemite thanks to a major change by Apple, but there are still some problems you may run into.

If you need to fix slow WiFi on OS X El Capitan, you may need to restart your router and modem, unplug them for about 30 seconds to a minute. If this doesn’t fix it you can try turning your WiFi off on your Mac. Click on the WiFi icon and then Turn WiFi off. After a minute turn it back on. This can fix many problems.

Other potential fixes including clicking on Open Network Preferences and then on Advanced to change the order your computer should connect to, options to delete a WiFi network and more. Sometimes deleting a connection and re-adding it will fix the issue.
