High Memory Consumption with OS X El Capitan

I have a MacBook Air (11-inch, Mid 2013),1.3 GHz Intel Core i5,4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 to which I have installed OS X El Capitan and is getting stuck on opening applications and software services. Is there something that I should be aware or any specific action that I should do. Is really bothering to have to wait for services. Basically I have to wait until system gets ready and continue working.

Same issue here on MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2013). From startup the system's memory consumption is really high, it leaves only 50-100 Mb free. I experience this since i upgraded to El Capitan.

Same problem!

Both mail and photos destroy not only the CPU, memory and energy consumption, but bizarrely also appears to reduce my SSD capacity by 30GB.

Both mail and photos are synced with cloud & other devices, but presumably if they are trying to download items locally it would be a permanent transfer? Yet, as soon as the program is shut the drive capacity increase once more. Very odd.

On a similar note, I have never been able to view all of my mail folders using a mobile OS. Neither Mac mail, nor outlook on my iPhone 6 seem to be capable of syncing all folders. I read somewhere that there might be a limit (to the number of folders) but why should this be an issue, provided there is sufficient capacity on the device???

Same problem here since I upgraded to OSX El Capitan, OSX Photo is eating up my MacBook Pro, every time I tried to use OSX Photo. Please find attached my Etrecheck report. I will appreciate any help since I am starting to question the "improvements" on OSX Photos and El Capitan all together.

I'm also having the same problem, but without actually running any program. I have a mid 2009 MBP, with El Capitan and a 1TB SSD.

I installed Istat and Memory Purge to help manage the massive amount of memory drain. I tested by booting and then just watched the RAM usage monitor. Within 5 minute I was down from 8GB to 100MB, without launching a single program.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing such a massive RAM usage?

Jan 9, 2016 2:26 PM in response to ElNano

Photos is taking ups most of the memory and I'm guessing CPU cycles. Do you have the iCloud Photo Library enabled? If so how big is your library, i.e. no. of photos?

As for storage space, do you still have your iPhoto library on your hard drive? The iPhoto and Photos library share the same original files that were in the iPhoto library at the time of migration. The Photos library does not duplicate the storage space.

What seems to be using most of the RAM as indicated in the Activity Monitor's RAM window? Also download and run Etrecheck. Copy and paste the results into your reply. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here (and recommended by Apple Support personnel) in the ASC to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

Jan 9, 2016 2:38 PM in response to Csound1

El Capitan's new memory management scheme uses as much memory as possible at all times. It's philosophy is "unused memory is wasted memory". When another app is launched it will release the necessary memory to run that app.

Check the memory pressure in Activity Monitor and as long as it's in the green and steady there's nothing to be concerned with.

Thanks for the suggestions. I did look at the Application monitor and you are correct I am still in the green when it comes to memory pressure. I ran the EtreCheck and here are the results:

Thank you! The activities that are using most of the RAM are Kernel_task=619MB, and mds_stores 205MB. I've removed all the adware as suggested. I didn't remove the trendmicro because i use it to monitor my young kids internet activity.

I did run a RAM test and these are the results I got...there is a failure at the bottom. I'm not sure what this means, or if it is the cause of all my random system crashes and Kernel Panics. Again I appreciate your insight.

Are you using 3rd party RAM in your Mac? If you do have 3rd party memory installed remove it and run with just the Apple memory that came with the Mac. Any improvement in memory usage and the RAM tests?

If you find removing the 3rd party memory improves things then you've got bad modules. Where did you get the modules. The only vendor many of us will recommend is Crucial.com or otherworldcomputing.com. They test their modules in each Apple model and guarantee compatibility.

I am using a 3rd party RAM. I can't remember who makes it, i got it off Amazon. When i saw the RAM test failure I ordered an 8GB upgrade kit from OWC two days ago. So when it gets here I'll install it. Thanks again for your help, i'll let you know how it goes from here. Now that you have educated me that the declining RAM on the monitor is not the issue but the memory pressure is, I feel better about it. If I can just get the computer from randomly crashing and restarting with replacing the RAM then I will be quite happy! I'll keep you updated.
