I can move my cursor via the trackpad but get no response when I click on something although it does work OK in safe mode, this has happened since I downloaded El Capitan

That sounds like your preference got lost in the traslation.

Thank you for your reply, I have already done a recovery from my external back up to Yosemite and everything is working fine now, I think I will leave it for a while before downloading El Capitan, thanks again.
