App Store hangs at sign in

Hi all, I searched this forum for similar topics, but I can't find anything identical so here goes.
I updated to El capitan a few days back and my system's been not quite right since. Namely iTunes & the App Store. They open fine, but when I attempt to sign in, it hangs forever with a spinning gear. Ultimately I have to force quit them both. Strangely, the iCloud sign in function in System Preferences seemingly works fine, as does logging in to Apple services via Safari.

I have tried:

NVRAM reset
SMC reset

Booting in safe mode

Setting up a separate administrator user account

Power cycling my router

Any ideas?
Thanks a bunch in advance

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View ▹ Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take an action that isn't working the way you expect. Select any lines that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name or email address, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.

There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.

If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.

*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.11 ("El Capitan"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.

Ah I didn't realise you'd replied before the safe mode reply I gave. OK so I need to reinstall from recovery? I can do that, no problem (aside from the miniscule download speed I have).

Linc, your patience and advice is most humbly appreciated. I thank you. Question though: Since it was upgraded from Yosemite, and Mavericks before that, I'm assuming I'll need my ID and password. all well and good, but will I receive the same 'hang' issue in Recovery mode? if so, is there an alternative or is it one of those 'take the plunge' situations?

Oct 6, 2015 3:34 PM in response to Davy Owen

Update:
The reinstall from Recovery Mode didn't work. The problem persisted. Seems the El Capitan installation was corrupted or incomplete, and therefore so was the recovery partition (Well that's my nearest estimation on what happened). Therefore what I did is Backed up all my stuff, wiped my drive and booted into Internet recovery.

For those of you who don't know how, you hold Cmd+Alt+R at startup when you hear the chime. You'll know it worked because you'll see a spinning globe instead of the Apple logo. It'll spend roughly 30 minutes checking out your system, and then on selecting reinstall OSX, it downloads THE VERSION OF OSX YOUR COMPUTER WAS SHIPPED WITH (in my case, Mavericks) directly from Apple rather than a recovery partition. Bear in mind this can be an incredibly slow process.

Now that's done, I've logged in to the App Store to see if my issue is fixed, and yes it is. But now I'm on an old OS. Tomorrow I plan to redownload El Capitan from the App Store. Once that's done it should be all swell. Long and drawn out process, but I've wanted to format the computer for a while, so hopefully all's well that ends well.

Thanks once more Linc for checking out my logs and leading me to the solution.

Oct 8, 2015 7:10 AM in response to Davy Owen

Update 2:
OK so it worked. To reiterate, here's what I did in steps:
1) Back up all files
2) Reboot into Recovery mode (Go to apple icon menu, select Restart, hold down Cmd+R at the chime until the apple logo is visible)
3) Wipe the hard drive using Disk Utility in Recovery Mode

Steps 2 & 3 may or may not be necessary, I was being zealous in my approach to fix the issue

4) Reboot into Internet recovery (Go to apple icon menu, select Restart, hold down Cmd+Alt+R at the chime until the globe is visible)
5) Choose Reinstall OSX when available
6) After installation go to the App Store and redownload El Capitan
7) Reimport/download all backed up files & required apps.

Thanks one final time to Linc Davis for looking through my console output and pointing me in the direction of what was required. My process was a lengthy one, but now my Mac works a charm. I owe you a pint, mate.
