Time Machine and two log ins

I have two log in IDs for my MacBook.

Does Time Machine back up BOTH sides at once or do I need to log in and do both sides separately?

If separately, do I need a separate external drive for each side?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Time Capsule is designed to do this automatically. See Pondini's FAQ 26 (very helpful article).

On your Time Capsule you will see a sparsebundle file named after your machine's name, and in the sparsebundle file there is an image of the entire disk of your MacBook.

You should be able to verify this worked OK by triggering a time machine backup from one account, then logging in on the other account and entering the time machine view. If one of your accounts is still using the old version of File Vault, then the backups will not work without being logged in on that account.
