I have an iMac running OS 10.9.5; I use timemachine backup; my anti-virus software detected a virus in a back-up file; I moved the file to trash but cannot empty trash. I have tried holding down option key and emptying trash with no success;

I have an iMac desktop running OS 10.9.5 and use timemachine

My anti-virus software detected a virus in one of my back-up folders

I moved this folder to the trash but cannot empty trash

I tried holding down the option key when emptying trash with no success

I tried renaming the file, restarting the computer and running empty trash

again with no success

Any ideas on how to delete this folder?

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)
