If they are AIM or Jabber Buddies try zipping (compressing) the pic first (Or sending them in a folder when the app will do this)
If it is iMessages the Signing out and In again is a good place to start.

In that case try a PRAM/NVRAM reset by Restarting the computer and holding down CMD+ALT+P+R all at the same time until you have heard three start up bongs and then let the start up continue normally.
