macbookpro no longer boots up after upgrade to El Capitan

After installation, everything was working fine and was quite zippy. Shut down for the night and attempted to reboot next day. The screen gets stuck at the Apple logo and progress bar, but with no progress. Have tried a number of things but no joy. What to do next?
