Why does my Mac say I used so much space?

I realized that my Macbook Pro 15" (Early 2011) is running a little sluggish. Then I saw that my applications were using over 200gb. I don't have many apps for it to be using that much so I'm very confused. How do I free up some of this space?User uploaded file

There is a known biug in that screen that can report volume usage incorrectly. If you add up the actual numbers shown under each category, you'll find it does not come to 379GB. This article on Spotlight reindexing usually fixes the confusion:
