El Capitan won't Boot after update

I installed El Capitan and it was booting fine. Then I installed the latest update and after the restart, the Mac loads the Apple logo and then screen goes white and it just freezes there. I tried restarting holding shift to log into safe mode and it remains white. I've even held down command and R to get the recovery mode to load. I see are the boot options but when I select one, I just goes into a white screen.

And you continue to think that Apple can test and control every single variable...? I know I can't after 2 1/2 decades doing similar enough things.

Look, again, I'm not excusing this mess... but I doubt you've had to do anything as complex as an operating system to support a number of generations of hardware and upgrades from a half-dozen or more previous versions, along with all the uncountable variables in each person's individual build and software packages installed. *shrug*

Bottom line... they'll get there. So everyone lighten up a little; fixes are available and I can't see how Apple hasn't found out about this and is investigating as best they can.

NO, but you talk about every single variable?????

You dont see (are you apple employee?), that there are hundreds, thousends of users and their system don't longer boot. Have you heard of any offical solution from apple or even a statement?

I know murphy's law!

All practical help I could find to help me overcome the situation came from users - that is the point and this is not acceptable.

p.s. I d'ont care about, what you doubt, so let us end this discussion

I have seen many users post that their systems don't boot, and it almost always boils down to some third-party crapware.

Eltima's SyncMate seems to have made a dramatic appearance here lately.

But they can be made to boot, and so far - unless people wander off the path of decent diagnostic procedures, or make a choice to blow away the partition - no data's being lost, and so far... as noted elsewhere... it all *seems* to come down to interaction with third-party software.

And no, I don't work for apple... I'm just saying I've been through quite a bit in my career and anyone thinking they could do better and account for everything you'd see in the wild in Apple's shoes... you're making a choice to delude yourselves.

I also think Apple should be quicker on the fix on this, but it's not a dead end, here.

People should just take a breath, follow the steps, and understand the *actual* problem.

BBlaming third party software is ok but if apple can't see that coming maybe they should not do upgrades and leave things alone.

Apple didn't do an upgrade on my Mac, I did.

I have always seen that third-party crapware breaks at almost any update and more often with a full OS upgrade. That's why if falls into the category of crapware.

A software company that produces such stuff should be proactive and release patches prior to the release of the OS. If they can't, they should notify their customers.

I can recall, however, some upgrades which actually placed questionable apps into a separate folder after installation and allowed the users to "try" them out again if they dared. Was apple more careful in those days or more brazen today?

I've been using Macs for about thirty five years and still do not know all the incidentals of systems etc but I consider myself average in use. How about the starter in Mac use...he/she must be destroyed by all this....

Having read through this thread, there doesnt seem to be any definitve fix.

A few squabbles about who's right and wrong, but lots of diversions taking things off topic and some very unhelpful responses.

so mac mini no longer booting.

brand new imac TODAY no longer booting after updating and backing up from time machine. Lots of hair pulling going on.

All the suggestions here presume I can get past post checking. i cannot get past apple logo and empty progress bar.

despite me trying restore mode/ safe mode numerous times, sitting patiently watching nothing...im afraid I'll get screen burn

I have the external time machine usb drive in and nothing else blue tooth keyboard and mouse.

Have waited over an hour and nothing works Thus far

any specific instructions for a grandma please will be gratefully received.

Hi Thanks for replying to my help early. I have got both my MacBook and IMac to start working again with El Capitan. I did a recovery by holding on to the Option+Command and R buttons and the forced recovery allowed me to reinstall El Capitan. It took some time..a few hours to complete installyion and once done it was working fine. Can you try this?
