Pairing Older Apple Wireless with iPad 2

I have an older Apple Wireless Keyboard (white keys!) and the iPad sees it under Devices (in Bluetooth) but ultimately gives me an error message "pairing unsuccessful...not supported"

True or is there a way around this?
