notes: search broken

since upgrade to el capitan, the search field in notes on my mbp is broken.

search term returns nothing or only partial results without any understandable pattern.

tried reindexing spotlight twice, no luck.

search functions properly on iphone and ipad, both running ios 9.

notes are synced via icloud.

any help appreciated.
