I knocked my phone off of a table. There are no cracks or visible damage but the screen is black and won't show anything.
I tried holding down the power button, but nothing happens. Oddly, the phone is still playing the message notification chime when something comes in. Can anyone help?

Take it to apple it is probably the backlight.
Holding down the power button won't do anything. You need to Reset by holding down the Wake/Sleep and Home buttons until the Apple logo appears.
Accidents are normally not covered by warranties, unless you bought AppleCare+ which entitles you to a replacement unit at a nominal cost.
How long should I hold down the home and power buttons? I tried for about 30 seconds and nothing happened.
The Apple logo usually appears within about 10-15 seconds. Since it did not appear, assume you have a hardware issue.
