I bought a new blank 1 T hard drive for my MacBook Pro. When I plug it in via SATA to usb, the computer can't recognize it. What do I have to do to solve this problem? I'm trying to swap out the current hard drive with the new one.
Launch Disk Utility and partition the drive, one partition, and take all the defaults and you should be fine.
I have the new drive connected by the SATA to USB cable. The MacBook will not recognize it, so I can't launch Disk Utility to that new drive. MacBook doesn't see it.
If Disk Utility does not list that drive, by Hardware name, in the column at the left, it cannot be Read, Written, Initialized or Repaired.
If the cabling is correct and the drive has power, it is dead to you.
Sounds like your brand new drive is dead on arrival. Take it back where you bought it and ask for a replacement.
How do I get power to the drive? I feel dumb, but that's okay.
what enclosure or adapter are you using?
If it is a kit that looks like loose parts, there should also be a piece that has a power "brick" or "cube" that has an AC power cord. Add that to your setup and plug it in, and you should be good to go.
