where is the safari sidebar in 10.11?

I like my sidebar in Safari. I no longer have my sidebar in Safari. I click on view and it shows "hide sidebar", which makes me think I should be seeing my sidebar, but it is not there. Nothing I click gets me my sidebar back. I have many, many bookmarks there. How can I get that back? Or did my bookmarks get eaten just like my photos disappeared when I got this iMac?
