Am trying to connect a video camera to my MBP to use it as a live feed monitor. Any thoughts? Have tried iMovie, iPhoto and image capture apps to no avail.

As you have found, those will not work. 😉
You need software that will stream the feed for your purpose (broadcast, security, etc).
You don't specify your need, but here are a couple of examples to get you started in your own search:
• Security Spy
