I have a 21.5-inch mid 2011 iMac: 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 / 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 / Macintosh HD / AMD Radeon HD 6750M 512 MB.
Operating system is OS X El Capitan
Should I buy more ram etc to speed it up or bite the bullet and buy a new iMac?

That is still a very good Mac for the average user.
It would help a lot if you upgrade the RAM to at least 8GB by adding 2 more 2GB modules or even better, to 12GB by adding 2 more 4GB modules.
