Apple Mail app crashing

I am on El Captain OS...my apple mail application crashes once opened. Tried no of times...but crashes. Its happening for the first time

A Safe Mode boot deletes system caches that may help after an OS X upgrade.

Top left corner of your screen click the Apple  > Shut Down.

After your Mac shuts down, wait 10 seconds, then press the power button.

Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold down the Shift key. You should press the Shift key as soon as possible after you hear the startup tone, but not before.

Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple logo and progress indicator.

Once you are in Safe Mode, go back to the Apple  menu. From the drop down menu click: Restart

Then try Mail.

THANK YOU. I had been through several days of Apple Mail closing and unable to connect or never able to send mail, always asking for my password (although I'd put it in numerous times). When I did what you suggested (and held my breath because I have FileVault turned on...so I wondered if it would still go into safe mode), Apple mail has been receiving and sending with no problem.
