Power Mac G4 MDD QuickSilver power light turns on then off, sometimes has chime but still turns off.

Hey I was gifted a PowerMac G4 "MDD" quick silver.

I was told that it had a problem booting up and just needed a new PRAM battery and then the PRAM reset.

I bought a new battery from Amazon and I replaced the old one.

The computer chimed on but then shut off right after. I tried unplugging everything and pressing the pram reset button then waiting 20 minutes and it turned on for a little bit, but after about 1 hour it shut itself off and didn't turn back on again after. I pressed the button on the tower separate and then on the monitor separate and then both simultaneously it would beep and then the fan turned on louder and then it reset itself back to the chime but then immediately after that it shut off.

I have 2 GB of ram in the computer and it runs on OSX 10.5.8, but it turns on when it wants too. Once it turns on and stays on it will have the airport wireless pick up the wi-fi signal and also say the date set was before the year 2001 so there will be instability or something like that.

Not sure what exactly is happening.

PowerMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8), Powermac G4 MDD QuickSilver DUAL G4

MDD & Quicksilver are different models. 🙂

Just checking... was the PRAM Battery installed the right polarity?

If you can get it ON again, might try this...

Does it boot into Open Firmware with CMD+Option+o+f ?

reset-nvram (press Enter)

set-defaults (press Enter)

reset-all (press Enter)

Have you done a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...

In fact, do 3 in a row, takes a bit of time.
