I have both a 6th gen and a 5th gen Airport Extreme. I'm setting up a new network in an apartment. Is there a preference as to which one should be the base station (connected to the modem) - and the other "extending" via an ethernet connection?

The 6th Gen is capable of producing much higher speed "ac" wireless, so you would want to locate that AirPort in the area where you will be using your other "ac" wireless products most of the time.
