My macbook pro currently states in the system overview that I have 32.5 GB of Movies saved to my computer. I don't have any files on my computer- so I am not sure where these are to delete them. It also says that I have 8 GB of photos, which are also not on my computer. I do not see any files in finder or in photos. I have emptied the trash as well. Between these 2 things, I can free up 40GB of space. Where would they be hiding?

There is a bug in that display program. Often a Spotlight reindex will correct it:

Thanks! That helped. Now to figure out what has taken up 98GB of my HD. Any suggestions as to what I can get rid of that will free up some space?
Download from the Internet OmniDiskSweeper and Grand Perspective (both free) and open them. They will show all of your files and the respective sizes. Transfer to an external HDD or delete files you no longer want on your MBP. Do not forget to empty trash. Only then is space allocated for new data.
