MacBook Pro fans running more/higher/louder on 10.11

Hi all,

After the update from 10.10 to 10.11 we experienced a change with the fan speed on all of our MacBook Pros with Retina display (Mid 2012 models). The fans are running more often faster / louder, and with an external display attached the fans are running all the time at a much higher level than on 10.10.

Many thanks for feedback, and best regards,

Matthias

I have a MBP early 2011 (i7 quadcore, 16 gb ram).

With Yosemite everything worked just fine, I generally couldn't even hear the fans, whatever the number of apps active.

Since El Capitan, the fans started spinning wildly and in Activity Monitor I noticed an insane CPU usage from Finder & Firefox, as you can see from the image attachement. What's wrong with this?

Thank you,

I'm seeing the exact same thing as Matt.Hias. Have the same Mac as you (rMBP mid 2012). Without an external monitor everything is fine, fans running at ~2K rpm silently. Almost immediately after connecting an external monitor (Dell 24"), GPU/Diode temperature rises from ~50°C to ~70°C, and after a couple of minutes fans rise to ~4K rpm and very loud, staying there until external monitor is disconnected.

Any idea?

I have a mid 2012 15" retina MBP as well. The fans run all the time at max speed after upgrading to el capitan, under certain circumstances. After spending a few days troubleshooting this issue, these are my findings.

Fans run faster only when I connect an external display.

Fans run faster only when I set the external display to max resolution/Default for display which happens to be 1920x1200 in my case.

Fans are quiet if I select any other resolution (eg. 1600x1000). At this resolution, the fans do not come on no matter what I'm doing on the computer including a webex meeting, Skype or screen sharing.

I used "Macs Fan Control" App to monitor fan speeds. The GPU Diode & PECI GPU temperature seems to go up as soon as I choose the higher resolution on the external display and the fans gradually run faster and faster until they reach max speeds. They gradually slow down as soon as I decree the resolution.

I use my laptop primarily for work with a external display always connected. This is really annoying me. This never happened before el capitan. I upgraded from Mavericks.
