Sort images by date captured

Is there a way to sort images by date captured? As far as I see it is possible to sort images by file date. I cannot see any logic reason for this. Does any user prefer to sort images this way? My images are taken by mobile devices and as far es I can see they are sorted correctly. But any image I have captured with real cameras and edited in apps like Capture One Pro or Photoshop are sorted by the date I exported them. Sorted by file date did not make any sense especially when I have to mix images from different sources in an album. I know this was a problem with the Camera Roll on mobile devices before and I had contact with Apple Support a view years ago. They could not tell why images sorted by file and not by capture date. Now as Photos displaced Aperture and iPhoto the problem swapped over from mobile devices to the Mac.

Photos (Moments/collections/years) is sorted by photo date

All Photos is sorted by data added to Photos

User albums can be sorted by title or photo date either assending or decending

Sadly the app does not sort images by the date they are taken like noted in the meta data and I think that is the kind oft sorting that makes most sense. Sorted by the date the images were saved leads to a confusing arrangement when you mix images taken by an iPhone and images that were processed from raw data in a raw converter like Capture One.

Did your external editors preserve the EXIF capture date? You can check this by exporting the original from Photos with "File > Export" and then open the exported file in Preview. The Inspector will show you the EXIF Capture tag. If the capture date has been preserved, you can sort by date as Larry described.

Hi Leonie,

you've helped me so much in the past I'm hoping you can shed some light on a very annoying problem I have when listening to music on my iPhone.

Sometimes the volume reduces to half and the only way (temporarily) to get full volume is to send and receive an email to myself?! I've just had an iPhone 6s Plus and it's the same as it was on my old phone? Any ideas?

I followed your clue and now I think I found the problem: I have used JPEG2000 the first time and it seems that Capture One writes meta data in a unusual way for this file format—maybe it depends on JPEG2000 in general. I will try writing the images again as normal JPEG files and I am sure that would work.

You're welcome, Markus.

Please let us know, if switching from JPEG2000 to JPEG will correct the problem with the dates. It will be good to know for the next one with a similar problem.
