Red overlay in Safari when web inspector is enabled

Since I upgraded to El Capitan I alway get a red overlay whenever I click something in the browser window. This is pretty annoying especially when you try to debug a website or CSS3 animations because it always interferes with the actual animation.

Is there some way to hide this overlay?
