Coffee Cup

When I open a Messenger Window, I get a coffee cup with a red exclamation point on it.

Does anybody have a solution to this. Thanks!

The "coffee cup" is the symbol for Java. If it is showing a "red exclamation" point, it means the Java applet did not load.

Have a look in your Utilities folder>Java. Which versions are installed in your system?

Another way to determine your current Java version is to access this web site.

Sometimes the Java cache needs to be cleared. Have a look at this earlier post for guidance.

Post back and let me know what you discover.

I thought an "outside chance" existed J2SE 5.0 would be OK for Panther, however, now that I have had a closer look at the system requirements I realize it's only for Tiger.

When you say "Messenger", do you mean Instant Messenger?

Would you post the URL you are attempting to access. It's quite possible IM is looking for a version of Java not available on your system.

Hello. It used to work just fine (not Instant Messenger -- that still works)

The Messenger link is this:

http://www.gay.com/messenger/cmd.html?op=roomList&rand=1651459970

It stopped working after I did some clean-up on Safari awhile back.

The Messenger link was working on Internet Explorer, but now I am having webpage problems with IE.

The link can also be accessed through this webpage:

Thanks.

Aww Peter, still with this issue ?

It stopped working after I did some clean-up on Safari awhile back.

The cleaning and speeding up Safari really should not be the issue that created this this problem.

Try Safari in a other user or "Test" account, to create one:
Under the Blue Apple go > System Preferences /Accounts/ Login Options use the [+] to create one, for ease you could enter test in all the fields.

This will help to determine if there is an issue with your user account only or a system wide problem. It maybe a preference corruption or a 10.3.9 issue.

Look at this page on a fix that worked for this person when he & others would get this error this error Java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: getProxyConfigURL

http://www.tomrafteryit.net/javalangunsatisfiedlinkerror-getproxyconfigurl-error -on-os-x/

This was the result on my Applet test using same version os/safari & Java as yours.

I will try these link on java on my Tiger Powerbook & bet it will have better results.

Also check this out on how to configure the browser.
"your web browser is: Netscape Version: 5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/312.8 (KHTML, like Gecko) Safari/312.6 "

Good luck, hope you get it sorted out, please keep us posted; )

The error message is helpful. You may have a corrupted Java plug-in in your Internet Plug-ins folder (Main or User Library).

Suggested steps:

Download new Java apps. from here.

Quit Safari.

Move all existing Java plug-ins to the desktop from the Internet Plug-ins folder (Main or User Library). Also, move the existing Java folder in the Utilities menu to the trash (do not empty it), and restart the computer.

Once booted, go to the Java download and install it. Once completed, "repair permissions" using Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.

Post back with results.

Hi Peter,

Have a look at this Apple article regarding Java and Panther. It will direct you to the correct download link (I saw the 1.4, forgetting there was a second version for Tiger). I believe this will help you resolve the conflict in your existing User Account.
